Overview
The Canada Student Visa, also known as a Study Permit, allows international students to study at Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs) in Canada. You may also work part-time and apply for a post-graduation work permit (PGWP) later.
Eligibility Criteria
- Letter of acceptance from a Canadian DLI
- Proof of funds (tuition + living expenses)
- Clean criminal record and good health
- Intent to leave Canada after studies (unless eligible to stay)
- English or French proficiency (required for SDS stream)
Documents Required
- Valid passport
- Letter of acceptance (LOA)
- Proof of financial support (bank statements, GIC, etc.)
- Tuition payment receipt (if applicable)
- Police clearance and medical exam
- IELTS or other language test (for SDS)
- Statement of Purpose (SOP)
Application Process
- Apply and receive LOA from a Canadian DLI
- Gather all required documents
- Create an IRCC account and submit application online
- Pay visa and biometrics fees
- Submit biometrics at VAC
- Wait for decision
Student Direct Stream (SDS)
The SDS program offers faster visa processing (around 20 days) for applicants from select countries like India, Pakistan, China, and others. Requirements include:
- IELTS score of 6.0 in each band
- Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) of CAD 10,000+
- Tuition payment for 1 year
- Medical and police clearance upfront

- Study Permit Application Fee: CAD 150
- Biometrics Fee: CAD 85
- Processing Time: 4–8 weeks (SDS: ~20 days)
Work While Studying
- Up to 20 hours/week during academic sessions
- Full-time during scheduled breaks
- Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) after graduation
