Canada offers several types of temporary work permits, most requiring a job offer and either an LMIA or employer exemption. Common streams include:

Types of Canada Temporary Work Permits

1. LMIA-Based Work Permit

Employers must apply for a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) to prove no Canadians are available for the role. Once approved, the worker applies for a visa.

2. Global Talent Stream (GTS)

Fast-track LMIA for skilled workers in IT, engineering, and digital roles. Processed in as little as 2 weeks.

3. Employer-Specific Work Permit

Allows you to work only for the named employer and position. Conditions include job title, location, and duration.

4. International Experience Canada (IEC)

For youth (18–35) from partner countries (e.g. UK, Australia, Germany). Includes Working Holiday and Young Professionals streams.

5. Open Work Permit

No job offer needed. Available to spouses of skilled workers/students or PR applicants. Also offered via Bridging Open Work Permit (BOWP).
