UK Skilled Worker Visa

Overview

The UK Skilled Worker Visa allows qualified individuals to work in eligible jobs with UK-based employers who are approved sponsors. This visa can lead to settlement (ILR) after 5 years.

Who Can Apply

You have a job offer from a UK employer licensed to sponsor skilled workers
Your job is on the list of eligible occupations (e.g. health, tech, engineering)
You meet the minimum salary and English language requirements

Who Cannot Apply

Jobs not listed on the UK’s eligible occupations list
Employers who are not registered sponsors
People intending to work in care roles (as of July 2024) from overseas unless already in the UK
Those with criminal records for serious offenses

Required Documents

Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) reference number
Job title and annual salary details
Proof of English language proficiency
Valid passport and travel history
Police clearance certificate (some countries)
Tuberculosis test (if applicable)

Application Process

Check if your job is eligible: Skilled Worker Occupation List
Ensure your employer is a sponsor: List of Registered Sponsors
Apply online and pay the visa fee + NHS surcharge
Upload documents and attend biometrics appointment
Wait for a decision (usually within 3–8 weeks)

Fees & NHS Surcharge

Visa fee: £719 – £1,500 depending on length and job type
NHS surcharge: £1,035 per year (prepaid at time of application)
You may be eligible for lower fees if your job is in a shortage occupation

Recent Changes (as of July 2024)

Health and Care Worker visa sponsorship from overseas is now restricted
Minimum salary threshold increased to £38,700 (general), lower for new entrants
Family dependants cannot accompany care workers unless already in the UK
New entrants route still available for certain jobs or under age 26
