Why Language Tests Are Needed
Most English-speaking countries require proof of language skills for visa applications. The test depends on visa type (student, skilled worker, PR) and the country.
Accepted English Tests
- IELTS – widely accepted in UK, Canada, Australia
- TOEFL – popular for USA, Canada student visas
- PTE Academic – accepted in Australia and some UK/Canada cases
- CELPIP – Canada immigration (PR only)
- Duolingo English Test – accepted by some US/Canada universities
UK Language Requirements
- Skilled Worker Visa: IELTS UKVI – Band 4.0 in speaking, listening, reading, writing
- Student Visa: IELTS UKVI (B2 level or higher)
- Settlement / PR (ILR): SELT (e.g. IELTS Life Skills B1)
Canada Language Requirements
- Skilled Worker PR: IELTS General or CELPIP – CLB 7+
- Student Visa: IELTS Academic or TOEFL – Band 6.0+
- Spousal Sponsorship: No language test required
USA Language Requirements
- Student Visa (F-1): TOEFL or IELTS – depends on university
- Work Visa: No test usually required, but employer may ask
- Green Card/PR: No test required, but English test during interview unless exempt
Australia Language Requirements
- Skilled PR Visas: IELTS General – Band 6.0+ or equivalent in PTE/CELPIP
- Student Visa: IELTS Academic – Band 6.0 or TOEFL 60+
- Partner Visa: Functional English or fee for language class
